NEW ZEALAND'S DEFENCES.
SIR GEORGE WHITE ON THE GO'VERNMENT SCHEME. [BY TBLEGItAPH.— PKKBS ASSOCIATION.] CHRISTOBURCH, This Day. The following letter has been received by the Premier from General Sir George White, dated Gibraltar, 10th September : — " I have had the honour to receive the defencd scheme laid before the New Zealand House of Representatives on the 20th July last, and beg to thank you for sending it to me. The value of military training in oui' colonies has been brought home to us with peculiar force by tho .'.oyal support that New Xcalupd and other colonies have given the Imperial Forces in South Africa. No war could possibly afi'ord ' more convincing oxainple of the powerful defence that may be organised in even a small population than Avhat tho Boers have accomplished by their system of careful arming, combined with organisation and military training. I have not the experience of your local conditions that would ' enable me to offer an opinion upon the details of your scheme, but it seems to promise excellent results, and I hope the money may bo forthcoming to give it a fair trial."
