ST. THOMAS'S REDOURT
OPENED THIS AFTERNOON. That the ladies of St. Thomas's Parish believe in being topical und up to date, the arrangement of I heir bazaar and sale of work in the Skating Rink affords ample evidence. The design attempts to follow the lines of a redoubt, and the plan aims at producing an effect which is in touch with the military spirit of the hour. Immediately upon entering the main door the visitor observes a gaily - decorated ambulance waggon, Hying tho red cross. This is the locale of a flower stall. Behind the waggon is a canteen lent, larien with requisites for smokers and others, and surmounted by a flag bearing the now historic message, "Mocking Relieved." Dowti the length of the Rink run several tents in stretches of canvas, under the canopy of which are the many wares, plain and fancy, which are to tempt purchasers throughout this week. The tented stalls have all the good things always seen at bazaars. One tent makes a feature of pictures of men who have made themselves conspicuous during the South African campaign. In the centre of the Rink is the ever-popular Maypole, and overhead fly a myiiad of flags and banners. The ever-present enterprising advertiser has his name writ large over even* conspicuous place in the Redoubt. There is a monster Christmas Tree, the sight of which will delight young Wellingtonia, and the bevy of fair attendants appear in military costumes. The Bazaar was opened this afternoon by Mr.«. Wall is, who was attended by representatives from sister churches. This evening's programme will include a grand march of stall-holder's and attendants (be*
ginning at 7.15 o'clock) 1 , Maypole dancing, scarf dance, a display by a .squad fioin the Navals, and a series of tableaux repi eventing scene.-; and incidents in the Boer war. Music is to be contributed by Jupp's Band and the Newtown Orchestra. The Bazaar has> been promoted a-; a means of raising a substantial contribution towards St. I'homas's Building' Fund. The management invites the attendance of "Voluuleeis in uniform, and our men who have lTlumt'd from South Africa, who will be admitted free.
