TOWN AND COUNTRY FIRES.

NARROW ESCAPE OF THE METROPOLITAN HOTEL. At one minute to 11 o'clock last night the Fire Brigade received a call frqm the Metropolitan Hotel, Molesworth-street, where a fire had broken out, and members of the Brigade were on the scene within four minutes thereafter. Meantime the fire, which occurred in one of the bsdrooms on the first floor occupied by two oi the female domestics, had been extinguished. One of the lodgers, while in the yard, had noticed flames in the girls' bedroom, and at once gave the alarm. Mr. T. Keegan and Mr. T. Leighton with great promptitude instituted a bucket service, and their united ertergiefc resulted in the fire being confined to the one apartment. The prompt presence of the Brigade averted further danger. The billiard table below was seriously, damaged by water which leaked through the ceiling, and the contents of •the roam in which the fire originated were entirely destroyed. The insurances were as follows : — Royal Insurance Company, building, £1800 ; Alliance, stock, ;J300 ; South British, furniture, stock, pilliard table, and piano, £650; United, lurniture, £300. The damage is comparatively slight, jut the entire building had a very narrow sscape from destruction. The house was full at the time, eveiy room being occupied,^ while a number of shakedowns were provided for excess occupants.
