At last night's meeting of the Petone School Committee, several complaints were received of severe punishment inflicted upon scholars, principally girls, by teachers other than tho head master or mistress. The committee decided to inform the head master that the practice must be discontinued, and the regulations in this respect rigidly adhered to, or future breaches of the rule will pro,bably be represented to the Education Board. Messrs. Harcourt and Co. report that f hey have now sold for £790 the three and five-roomed cottages, on land having a frontage of 100 ft to Doctor's Commons, off Hawker-street, which were passed in at the auclion sale yesterday. Miss Brown, of Wellington-terrace, is the, purchaser. Although but four months have elapsed i since the opening of the Petone gasworks the present consumption . of gas is considered to warrant the assumption that by the end of the first year the works will have earned sufficient to pay all interest charges and working expenses. That the anticipations of the Engineer (Mr. Smithies) as to the popularity of the new illuminant have been realised is evidenced by the fact that the first consignment of meters is all but exhausted. The Secretary of tho Eight Hours' Demonstration Sports Committee will be in attendance at the Trades Hall to-night for the purpose of receiving and closing ! nominations for various events, specified elsewhere in this issue. Acceptances for all events are to close next Monday week. j The poll of ratepayers of the Seatouri District on the wharves question will be taken on Monday. ' ' The Philosophical Society -will meet at the Museum on Tuesday next, when papers by Sir James Hector,- Mr. J. L. Lewis, and Major-General Schaw will bo read. Law lectures in connection with Victoria College will begin on Monday evening. The annual meeting of the Junior Cricket Association wul be held in the Baptist Schoolroom, Vivian-street, on Thursday next, at 7.45 p.m. The United Tradesmen's Club will meet at the Trocadero on Monday evening. It is proposed to form an art and crafts guild among the students and exstudents of the Wellington Technical School. A meeting for the purpose is convened for Wednesday next. It will be remembered that at the outbreak of the Transvaal War tho Vinolia Company (London) very generously announced that, for .the, purpose of assisting tho widows, orphans, and families of tho soldiers who fell in the campaign, it would contribute a halfpenny to the War Fund for every tablet of Vinolia soap sold during the month from sth November to sth December. Under this it was enabled to send £1000 at the end of the first week. The company extended its qffer to the end of the war, and at the end of June had forwarded £10,000 (representing nearly five million cakes of soap). Previous to' making this offer, this patriotic company gave one hundred guineas to the fund. Users of its 'soap therefore have the satisfaction of knowing that in addition to getting good value for their money they are indireotly aiding the widow and tho fatherless. Messrs. Finlayx M'Leod and Co. announce the arrival of new millinery, sailor hats, dress goods, prints, "muslins, etc., for which they promise ta give special value. Mr. H. Fielder, Manners-street, is now showing some splendid lines of house furnishings. Through our advertising columns he respectfully invites tho public to inspect the stock. Mr. A.
