Trooper Eames, of the Australian Horse (N.S. Wales), who was held a prisoner at Pretoria, escaped from custody and reached Mafeking. SYDNEY, 30th May. The Hon. H. Copeland, Agent-General for New South Wales, has cabled to the Government that £1000 has been handed to him from Lloyd's Patriotic Fund as a j preliminary grant towards the maintenance of New South Wales troops disabled in the war. Twelve wives and relatives of Victorian soldiers serving in South Africa have applied for relief out of the Patriotic Fund, and been granted allowances ranging from ten to twenty shillings per week. The Premier has communicated with the Secretary of State for the Colonies j with the view of obtaining permission j to present medals to the Victorian troops seiving in the war.
