KITCHENER AT CAPETOWN.
Here is an extract from a leter from Capetown which (says M.A.P.) reveals Lord Kitchener in a very characteristic light: — "The difference since Roberts and Kitchener arrived here is something stupendous. Kitchener toddles about, wa.ks into hotels, sniffs after young subalterns strutting about in Staff umforv, and makes himself geneially -unpleasant' The other day he presented himself before one of these pea<;oeky gentlemen, who was lolling about in the grounds of the chief hotel here, surrounded by a crowd of female admirers, and abruptly asked the young gentleman what his name was. The young gentleman sprang up, stood to attention, and informed him. 'And what are you doing here* said Kitchener. "Haw ! renlied the beauteous youth, 'I have just tome down from Moddah Rivah!' 'Oh!' said Kitchener, "Well, perhaps you had better go back to Moddah. Rivah. The train starts at 9 o'clock to-night!' and then he went in search of the next Staff officer. He is a holy terror to the gilded youth who have come out here to play at picnics."
