ACTION IN THE MELROSE BOROUGH.

APPOINTMENT OF A HEALTH OFFICER. The Sanitation Committee for the Melrose Borough met yesteiaay, when the Inspector presented a satisfactory report regarding premises which had so far been inspected. In one instance, where a house had been condemned, the oAvner, without furtner notice, had volunteered to pull it down forthwith. It was resolved to recommend the appointment of Dr. Chappie as Health/Officer for the Borough, and it is understood that he will take up the duties at once. Messrs. F. Townsend and E. G. F. Zohrab, of the Seatoun Road Board, are to inspect buildings in the district to see that they are in a sanitary state. The Board has empowered them to act. The majority of the passengers by the Waikare from Sydney, who landed in Wellington yesterday, presented themselves at the Police Station this morning and were examined by Dr. Fyfl'e, the Government Sanitary Commissioner, who satisfied himself that they were free from symptoms of the plague. The remainder of the passengers are to be examined before daik to-night. Constable Hutton, in his renorfc to the Johnsonville Town Board, stales that he has inspected the whole of the Johnsonville distroict, and has found that several w.c.'s were in a disgusting state, some of them being connected with the stream. The creek requires to be cleaned out, and the undergrowth of willows and other shrubs cut away. Two buildings in the village he found in a very ' dilapidated condition, very dirty, and they ought to be pulled down. Several places complained of had been cleaned up between his first and second visit. The constable states that he was ordered to afford the Board every assistance in getting the pluce put in good order. It having been ! reported that a quantity of 'condemned ! timber was being brought into the district for building purposes, the Board resolved to ask Constable Hutton to report on any unfit timber he may discern.
