TEE DRAINAGE SYSTEM.
ITS COMPLETION URGED UPON THE COUNCIL.; ■ i After being unavoidably held over since 25th January, Councillor Luke's notice of motion affecting the city sanitation came before the City Council last night. The motion proposed to entirely abolish the nightcart system prior to the Ist April, 1901, and that the Engineer report if there are any private or public building seqtions that are not at present served with sewers of the new 1 drainage system, where they are situated, and the estimated cost of enabling the property to be drained. Further, that if the unexpended Drainage Loan is not sufficient to complete the drains, the -Finance Committee provide means out of revenue. Lastly, that the Engineer report whether the time has arrived when the third pumping .engine should be obtained for the additional work and the same margin of reserve power that we have at present; and as to the desirability of procuring a separate, condensing engine and condenser in connection with , the main pumping engines. Councillor Luke added that though the Sanitary Committee had done something towards getting the drainage scheme finished, it had not .gone far enough. It was the most important ■work of the city, amd finances should be made available for it. A new pumping engine should also be obtained without i, dojfty, % the existing ones were often, working at high pressure, and there wsJls" likely to be danger of mishap and a block Would follpw. Councillor Tolhurst supported , the motion, considering it a step in the right direction, and that the Council should take the matter in hand without delay. Councillors Murdoch, Izard, Barber, and Townsend also supported the proposal, and considered that every building in the city should bo conneucpi w'th the drainage system without dela/. A few buildings with bad sanitary arrangements were most dotrimenr.il to tip. health of the city ns a whol>,. "I he sooner nightcarts were done away with the better. Councillor Townsend considered the motion "the finest that had ever been brought before the Council." The motion was then put and carried unanimously, the Mayor remarking that though a 13-months' limit of time was fixed the matter would most probably be attended to much before then. }
