THE WAR GENERAL BULLER'S FORWARD MOVEMENT.
OPEN COUNTRY BETWEEN HIM AND LADYSMITH. SUCCESSFUL SOItTIE FROM THE TOWN. [VHESS ASSOCIATION.] DURBAN, 13th January. Potgieter's drift, north of the Zwartskop bridge, whioh General Buller seiged on Thursday, is negotiated by a ferry boat worked by wire haulage. [Zwartskop is situated in a bend of the main Tugela river some twelve or fifteen miles west of Colenso and eighteen or twenty soutb-west of Ladysmith. The preseuce of the British troops at this point confirms our assumption from the telegram published on Saturday that General .Buller, besides crossing the Little Tugela at Springfield, bad pushed on to the main branch of the river.] The country northwards from the drilt is, open, and suitable for military operations towards Ladysiuitb. In order to further assist the operations of the relieving army, a body ot cavalry moved out of Ladysmith, aud riding southwards amidst dreuuliing rain, destroyed a bridge over the Tugela, thus isolating the Boer commandoes posted on Mount luhlawe to the eaatvvard of Colenso.
