RAILWAY RETURNS.

♦ The return of railway receipts and expenditure for the four weeks ending 9lh Deo. shows tho former to have been £119,718 Os lid., and the latter £80,419 2s 3d. In the corresponding period of the previous yoar the figures were £11(5,574 10s 4d and £17,570 10s 9d respectively. Of the revenue, the North Island Hues contributed £18,981 los 7d, as against £48,429 2s 4d, and Hie South Island lines £70,736 5s 4d, against £68,145 Bs. The North Island hues absorbed £34,664' 4s sd, as against £27,137 5s lid, and the South Island Hues £51,754 17a XOd, as against £40,433 4s lOd. The proportion of expenses to revenue on the several lines, cajculated on an animal average, for the respective periods of 189998, was as follows : — North Island — Kawakawa, 117-25, • 123-84; Wbangarei, 64" 19, 53-81; Kaihu, 78-26, 6771; Auckland, 7OHI, 70-36 ; Wellin^ton-Napier-New PlylHoutti, 77-39, 72-39. South Island— Ilurunui-BIuJT, 65-15, 65-10; GreymouthUrunner, 4299, 5927 ; Greymouth-Hoki-tika, 01-40, 01-33 ; Westport^ 41*97* 401)5; ZStlson, 124-55, J47-47: Piclon, 102-02, 120-71; .vaml total, 0818, 67 - 34.
