THE PARK DIFFICULTYSome twelve members of the Demontion Executive Committee again "waited upon Colonel Penton this morning, asking himto reconsider his decision not to allow fcfie use of Newtown Park for the demonstration in connection with the departure of the Contingent. Mr. Veitch voiced the request of the Committee putting forward the claims of the Park as affording the general public the best view of the demonstration. The Mayor (Mr. Aitken^ and Mr. Barber also spoke. In reply, Colonel Penton said he had discussed the subject with the officers of tho Contingent, and they had all expressed themseslves as being against the proposal, owing to the inconvenience it would cause at the encampment. After further discussion, t&e Commander of the Forces said thafc he would waive all his objections if the Committee would undertake to keep the parade ground and encampment cltear of the public whilst the troopers packed their kits. , Ifc was absolutely necessary that the ground should be kept dear, and it would tafce a strong force of men to do this. It was agreed that the Committee should let the Colonel know of its decision. Returning to the Council Chambers, t^e Committee had a lively debate upon the subject, the Mayor being in the chair. On the motion of Messrs. Gill and Holmes it was practically resolved thafc the demonstration should be held in the Basin Reserve. Then Mr. M. P. c Cameron suggested that the decision ' should be held over pending an efforb being made to get a force sufficiently strong to keep the flat ground of the park clear of the' public. Messrs. Haybittle, Barber, Beauckaanp, and Cameron were set up as a Committee to see what police, fire brigade, and other help could be got for this work, and to report at a meeting to be held to-morrow " morning. The members of the Musical Committee w v ere of opinion that the demonstration should take place at the Basin Reserve, where ample provision could be made for the safety, of the children. TO-MORROW'S SHAMFIGHT. An alteration has been, mad© in the ai"rangements for to-mori-ow's sham-fight between the Contingent and the Wellington Battalion. The position which Lieut. -Col. Collins 'proposed taking up near Kilbirnie to await an attack by the Contingent was considered impregnable, and would not give the storming party a chanco of success. It ' has therefore been decided thab the rifle battalion shall make an attack upon the camp at Newtown Pa.rk, which will be defended by the Contingent. An interesting military display is anticipated if the weather , proves fine. A short time ago the War Office notified the colonies that colonial officers could be sent to the front as extra officers with the army for the purpose of gaining experience. It has been decided to send Lieut. J. E. Hume, of the Per- • manent Militia, of Wellington, and stationed of late at Lyttelton, to the front for service with the Imperial Forces. He will journey to the Cape hy the troopsJiip Waiwera.
