» Some of the teachers in charge of -the Board schools in the district appear to be in doubt as to when the Christmas vacation closes. The schools are to reopen on Tuesday, 23rd inst., the day after Anniversary Day. I'he regulations provide that the vacation shall be five weeks from the Monday oefore Christmas, and the period expires on the 22nd inst., but that day being a public holiday, the scholars are not asked to reassemble until next day. Ministers have decided to appoint an additional Inspector of Machinery and Engineer Surveyor for this colony, and have offered the position to Mr. A. W. Bethune, chief engineer ot the Tutanekai It is likely that Mr. Bethune will accept the appointment, and that he will be stationed in Canterbury. Mr. Bethune hai been in the Government Service for upwards of twenty years. He served hia apprenticeship at **lr. Jabez Hay's Invercargill Foundry, and completed the finishing touches of his pro-
