CABLE STEWS. [ BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.— COPYRIGHT.] FRANCO-CHINESE FIGHTING.

» REVENGE FOR THE MON-TAO INCIDENT. HEAVY SLAUGHTER OF CHINESE. [PBESS ASSOCIATION.] (Received January 4, 9.30 a.m.) PARIS, 3rd January. France has exacted a se^ ere penalty trom Chiua for the recent murder of two French officers at Mon-tao, in Southern China, which had already led to the degradation by the Chiuese Goverumeut of the late Viceroy of the provinces of Kwang-tung and Kwang-si, who had his head-quarters at Canton. News has just been received that a force of marines was landed in the Mou-Tao district from a French warship to punish the inhabitants. The contingent was opposed by fifteen hundred Chinese troops, whom it defeated with the slaughter of two hundred. The casualties on the French side numbered fifteen. [According to The Times, the two officers whose death led up to these hostilities acted imprudently in crossing a river into a dangerous quarter, where they were murdered by the Chinese. The French Admiral seized the Prefect of Hai-nan and the neighbouring villages, and steps were then taken to ensure reparation.]
