RESIGNATION OF A BISHOP.

» THINKS HIS DIOCESE SHOULD HAVE A CHANGE. [PBESS ASSOCIATION.] (Received January 4, 9.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. The Right Rev. Samuel Thornton, who has been Anglican Bishop of Ballarat since 1875, has resigned his office, giving as his reason that he considers that it is in the best interests of the See that it should have a change of Bishop after his twenty-five years' occupancy of the episcopal chair. [Dr. Thornton is the only Bishop (other than his coadjutor, , Dr. Webber, appointed five years ago) *hat Ballarat has known, having been appointed simultaneously with the erection of the diocese. He was a distinguished Oxford man, and performed missionary work in the East End of London, after which he became Rector of St. George's, Birmingham, whence he was selected for the Bishopric]
