What at first unpeared to be a somewhat serious nfiV.ir occurred npi'r the Pier Hotel yc-lciday nlternoon, during 11 quarrel between some Jiremtn tmd .seamen. The result v.'ds tbe appearance in Court thi.'i morning of James P. GVa-thy, a fireman on the Paparoa, who was convicted 1 and discharged for diunkenness, and William Petersen, one of tlio crew of * tho Rukaia, who wt>s charged with having assaulted and wounded Car thy with intent to do him 1 grievous bodily hunn. Dr. Henry deposed that Car'thy had a small wound, about an inch long, in the fleshy part of the scalp behind the lett ear, but it was not at all s>erious. The charge Avas therefore reduced to one of assault, and dealt with summarily. The evidence showed that tho quarrel originated inside the Pier Hotel, and was continued outside, when there waa a general scuffle in which a knife was s-ecn in tho hand of accused (who was under the influence of liquor), and Caithy was slightly wounded. Whan Constable Ryan arrived on the scene, Carthy had the knife, which ha,d been taken from Putersen, who when arrested said he was assaulted by sevarail of tho Paparoa men. In reply to accused, Carthy denied having called Petersen (v.ho is a Norwegian) a Boor, but admitted that they had been discussing the trouble in South Africa, when accused picked up Carthy 's beer and would nofc put it down. Ultimately the Bench fined Petersen £3 and costs, or oile month's imprisonment. At tho samfe sitting of the C6urb, Nicholas A. S.
