A CHAPLAIN FOR THE CONTINGENT.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, — I understand that the Rev. Mr. Dove has volunteered to serve as Chaplain for the Contingent, and there is a very strong feeling amongst many of the leading citizens that the Government should accept his services, especially as there can be no doubt that those leaving for the seat of war will h/vve to go into action, whilst many thought that the last Contingent would probably arrive after the war was over. At present the Government state that there will be no room on the steamer, but surely the services of a chaplain should be considered as important as those of a doctor, the spiritual welfare ox the force being surely of the first importance considering the certain danger they are going into, and many very likely to a soldier's grave. I believe that all de-

nominations will unite in accepting Mr. Dove's services, and as an old English volunteer, and Chaplain to the Heretaunga, Mounted Rifles, he should be the very person to win the confidence of the men. Trusting that all those who read this will realise their responsibility to join in bringing pressure to bear upon the Government to accept a Chaplain, and also remember that the friends and parents of the soldiers would be comforted by knowing that not only a spiritual adviser but one who would be their sons'' friend was with them.— l am, etc., P. BARNARD BROWN. Manakau, 2nd January, 1900.
