A dastardly act, which might have resulted in the loss of life, was discovered on iSiituiday night. For some time after dark Forrest and Go's 'bus running between Woiser iJay and the city, was standing in the yard attached to Tuibot's smithy in Farish-street, and while there someone knocked out the brake-bolt and replaced it with a piece of wood. The 'bus left for the Bay a" few hours later with seventeen people in it, and just as it began lo descend the steep zig-zag leading into the Bay the diiver (Gawne, jun.) found to his dismny thai the brake was out of gcai". The vehicle went down the hill at v great rate, but it had not gone far when it lurched over. The driver, retaining his presence ol mind, managed to manipulate the horses «o UiaL it fell against a post on the outside of the steep road. It was thus prevented fiom falling to the bottom of the hill, a distance of fully 60fl or 7011 below. Ail the passengers were much shaken, and, of course, seriously alarmed. The matter has been reported to" the police, and in another column Forrest and Co. oxter a reward of £3 for information which will loacJ'to the conviction of those who tampered with the brake. The Wellington city public schools will break up for Christmas vacation on Thursday next. Two first offending inebriates were dealt with by Mr. W. After some delay, a Bible has been obtained for the solo use of the Conciliation Board, foi oath-taking purposes. It is somewhat of a novelty, as it contains the Old and New Testaments translated inlo Tamil, and was printed for the Madras Auxiliary Bible Society. With the exception of this last-mentioned information, no part of the contents is printed in English. The extension works at the Waitara Freezing establishment aro so far ahead aa to make it almost a certainty that slaughtering will be started early in January. Messrs. J. H. Bethune and Co. sold at auction to;day, by order of the Harbour Board, six buildings on the Victoria and Grainger-street block, all of them for removal. The largest — a house of six rooms lately occupied by Mr. W. Bltindford — was sold to Mrs. Ryan for £59. In another colximn Messrs. A. ( Collins and D. P.
