TEE HUTT COUNTY.

WORK OF THE EXPIRING COUNCIL. Mr. F. Bradey, Chairman of the Hutt County Council has forwarded to us the following statement of new Avorks which have been earned out within the last three years, during tho term of Council just expiring : — Belmont Riding. — Two miles of dray road constructed in Moonshine, and 40 chains of 6ft track; exjsmditure about £300,/ towards which had Government grants of £200, Constructed out of loan 60 chains of new dray road at Belmont, 10. chains and small bridge out of rates on same road. Constructed 37 chains of dray road near Akatarawa-road, (Martin'sroad), for which had grant of £50. On Hutt-Waikanae, opened out four miles of old bridle track by Government grant of £75, constructed 10 chains of road around cliff at Morgan's by Government grant of £100, did away wibh four bridges, and put in their stead two concrete and two timber culverts, and built two new bridges ; cost of bridges and culverts £150. Epuni Riding. — Constructed 40 chains new road in Whiteman's Valley (Russell'sroad), acquired the land for same and fenced it at cost of £96 11s 8d ; had Government grant of £50. Built new bridge Whiteman's Valley road, two in Stokes Valley, one in Chittick's-lane, Taita, with concrete abutments ; cost of the three about £80. Also built concrete culvert on main road, Taita ;' cost £38 12s. Horokiwi Riding. — Built bridges at Stewart's Ford, Judgoford, Taylor's and Flighty' s road (iron bark stringers in each), bridge at Boulton's, and new bridge on main west road near W. Jones's, widened portions of Belmont and Small Farms road, etc., and formed about 20 chains of Bayroad ; expenditure about £450. Mungaroa Riding. — Constructed tvp and a half miles new road and about three miles of fencing of the same ; cost of works about £700 ; had Government grant of £500. Put in new 20ft bridge near Whiteman's Valley School, a 14ft bridge Lett's road, Pakuratahi, and on East-road redecked the Mungaroa bridge. Put in concrete culvert on Mungaroa Hill, a 20ft bridge near Collie's at Pakuratahi, and 22ft bridge on Rimutaka with concrete piers. Porirua Riding. — Widened out 80 chains* of Ngahaurang"a-Horokiwi-road, and metalled the same ; cost £224 8s ; had Government grant £100. Also expended grant of £96 on Paparangi-road. Wainuiomata Riding. — By loan of £500 widened out f our miles of Hutt to Gollan's Valley-road, built three bridges on same road ; cost £40. Whareroa Riding. — Settled the questions of the connection of West-road at Paraparaumu by purchasing J. Hclin'a section. Settled question of compensation to Wellington uud Manawatu Railway Company, etc. Constructed two and a quarter miles of Beach-road at Paraparaumu, half mile of Valley- road, formed and metalled half mile Hinemoia-strcet, two and three-quarter miles main West-road' (Paikakariki-Parnparaumu), got 105 chains more drained ready for formation, constructed about 60 chains outlet drains, and spent £220 in fencing roads. Metalled over a milo of Wiiiknnau-Paraparaunm-road. Total cost of above works about £2000 ; had grants towards the same of £1040 5s Bd. Also by loan metalled Wai-kanac-road, and by Government grant of £75 opened out six miles of Hutt-Wai-kiinae-road, and also widened and metalled about a milo ot other roads in Rikionmgi. All the above aro new works, upnrL from the general repairs throughout the County, which have also boon exceptionally heavy during tho past two years, owing to tho hoavy storms and Hoods, and damage by fire. All tho river protect ivo works havo been of good service, and havo slood the test of the heaviest Hoods experienced for 40 years without damage, proving tho stability of tho works. The now boundaries of th« Ridings, which come into force willi (ho ck-ctioi'i of the i),'gw Council on tho 15th, should prove much more satisfactory and workable than the old. Last, but not least, tho now County Oflicos, a description of which was pul)lishcd a few months ago, Iwivo proved lo be very suitable and convenient. Tho fine shop, etc., on the ground floor in now lot for a term of seven yours itt a runlal of over £200 per annum.
