[press association.] AUCKLAND, Bth November. By a fire at Pine Island the residence of Mr. John Harvey was destroyed. The owner had been on a visit to Auckland, and returned to find the place in ruins. He will be a heavy loser, having just furnished the place for tourists. Insurances — House, £250 in. the Alliance; furniture, £155 in the National. The scutching house at Coates's flaxmill, Hamilton, was destroyed by fire, caused by a spark from the engine. Thirteen bales of flax were destroyed. The damage done amounts to £100. There was no insurance. Fully 1400 entries have been received for the Auckland Agricultural Society's show — the largest number on record. The exhibition of the Auckland Society of Arts was o-ened this evening with a conversazione, a large and fashionable audience being present. Mr. A. E. Devore delivered an inaugural address and alluded to the kindness of Lady Ronfurly in sending three of her own paintings and eleven from her private collection. The southern exhibitors were Mr. l<Jairn, of Wellington, and Mr. W. M. Gibb, of \ Ohristcmirch.
