Thp vital stnlistirs for Wellington for the month endinir to-day show a decrease in the number of births, deaths, and marriages as compared with those of the previous month. This month there were only 89 births as against 108 in June, 38 deaths against 60, and 37 marriages against 44. During the past year there were 2003 persons employed at coal mining in the colony. There was only one of the number fatally injured in the work. At quartzmining 4721 persons were employed, and there were nine fatal accidents. Alluvial, hydraulic, sluicing, and dredging mining employed 8951 persons, and 12 of them wero fatally injured. The strong complaints made from time to time of the inadequate "lock-up" accommodation at the Central Police Station have not been in vain. A day or two will see tho addition of five additional cells (making now nine in all), including one padded cell for special cases such us lunacy or where self-violence is feared. The new cells, and also the four which havo been in use for some time, are to be warmed by Htcam heater?;, so thnt there should bu no more complaints of thrusting unfortunates into "freezing chambers," to almost perish there beforo their appearance in the Court. A further improvement at the Central Station is the erection of a new messroom for the police. This room will he fitted up with many conveniences for the comfort and convenience of those who use it. It is reported that anthrax has broken out amongst the cattle at To Puke, in the Bay of Plenty district.
