HOCKEY.
. 1 The match United I. v. Wellington I. played at Miramar on Saturday, had been looked forward to for aomo timo by hockey playoru and their friends. Tho older club was tipped to win, but the United " got homo " by four goals to ono. Even this result does not show the real state of the game, us during the second spell nearly tho wholo of the play took place, in the Wellington twenty-five. The United deserve thoir win, as being tho direct outcome of enthusiasm and steady practico. The Wellington team was outclassed in every department of the game on Satur* day, but possibly, a festivity, the night beforo was a factor in favour of tho United, and, if so, it may' be expected that the Welington players wUI show better form in the next game. Tho United 11. v. Wellington DT. match at Island Bay was spoiled through the latter team turning up several men short, much to tho disappointment of their opponents. By letting the Wellinton team havo the services of' three men from tho Unitod team an oven battle was arranged. Tho game was fast, a muddy ground notwithstanding. Tho Uniteds scored eight Soals (O. Blundell, four; M'Lean, threo; [ing, one) to three (Barrett, two; Bridge, one). Tho western end of the field was very wet, and a pool of muddy water near tho striking circle gave opportunity for somo acqua'tic performances which furnished more amusement to the onlookers than comfort to tho performers.
