LATEST FROM RAROTONGA. COL. GUDGEON HAS A THRILLING EXPERIENCE.

[Nx TELEGRAPH— MIKSS ASSOCIATION.] Auckland, Ist July. The steamor Ovalau, which arrived, today from Rarotonga, brings news that the schooner Torea, bound from the island of Palmerston to Rarotonga, was wrecked off the island of Mauki. While she was olose in shore a gale struck the vessel, and she was unable to get to sea. Two anchors wero dropped, but tho vessel dragged, struck a reef stern on, and soon became a total wreok. Very little was saved, and the wreck was sold for 20s. Lieut.-Colonel Gudgeon, British Resident at Rarotonga, had a narrow escape when cruising through the group on board the sohooner N^amaru Tuhi. The vessel was struck by a squall, and thrown on her beam ends. She remained thus for some time, but fortunately the sails split and the vessel righted hersolf, much to the relief of the passengers, as the probability was that the vessel would have foundered with all on board. Tbe British Resident has been explaining the Federal scheme to the natives throughout tho various islands, and also urging them to give up their penchant for lawmaking and set to work to cultivate the land.
