OUR DEFENCE FORCES. CITY RIFLES.
On Saturday afternoon the City Rifles held at Karori the eleventh competition for the A and B Class trophies and the last competition for the New Zealand Rifle Association's aggregate ; 300 and 700 yards, seven shots at each range. The best scores were : — A Class. 300 700 Tl. Pvt. Turner 29 25 — 64 Sergt. Bunckenburg* ... 30 21 —61 Pvt. Howe* 30 21 — 61 Pvt. Faber 27 20 — 47 Pvt. D. Olaridge ... 28 18 —46 B Class. Corp. Wicken 28 23 — 51 Pvt. Harris* 24 24 — 48 Pvt. E. Claridge ... 24 19 —43 ♦Ammunition prizes. The following is the result of the competitions held for the corps' representative team to the New Zealand Rifle Association's meeting, to be held at Wanganui on the 25th inst. : — Private Turner, 419 ; Private Howe, 412 ; Sergeant Bunckenburg, 390 ; Private Madden, 381 ; Private Harris, 381 ; Corporal Wickens, 379 ; Sergeant Halpin, 377 ; Private Faber, 369 ; Private D. Claridge, 368. The first five will receive £4 each towards expenses. Sergeant Marshall and Privates Hams, Claridge, and Guise will also be among the corps' representatives at the meeting. The first annual camp of the Star Club Submarine Mining Corps began at Shelly Bay on Saturday. The company, numbering 42, went over to the Bay in the Ellen Ballance. A good deal of submarine work was done before dark. In the evening a smoke concert was held in the marquee. Divine service was conducted at the camp yesterday by the Bishop of Wellington. Captain Falconer agaiu went over to the camp last ni^hb, and assisted in giving instruction in submarine work. Forty-four men are in camp under Lieutenant Newton. The Mount Eden rifle range, which was recently closed on account of its reported dangerousnes?, was re-opened to-day by Colonel Banks for Volunteer class firiug. He contends that there is no danger if the firing is done under proper supervision.
