OUR DEFENCE FORCES.

The Defence Department has issued a circular to officers commanding volunteer districts authorising the issue of free passes on all Government railways to members of volunteer corps and Government rifle clubs attending the New Zealand Rifle Association's meeting at Wanganui either as actual competitors or markers. Orders for the double journey " may also be issued to male civilian members of the Association and private rifle clubs who are actual competitors, provided that the two latter forward their full names and addresses to the local secretary of the Association, who will then forward the list on to Major Som'merville, the Chairman of the Association, at Wancanui, for action by him." Among the Volunteer officer appointments notified in this week's Gazette as approved are those of Lieut. Alfred Hutson, Wellington Cycle Corps ; Captain EdWard Tregear and Lieuts. J. M. King and J. C. Lewis; Civil Service Rifles } Captain 0. B. MoTison,*and Lieuts. J. Keir and J. H. Moore, Zealandia Rifles ' LieUt. M. A. Nsill, District Rese'rvo Corps, td be captain and Adjutant in 2nd Battalion, Wellington (West Coast) Rifle Volunteers ; and Captain John Chicken, of the Napier itiflesj to, be Major 3rd Battalion, Wellington (East Coast) Rifle Volunteers, The Defence Department has accepted the services of No. 3 Company* Waikato Mounted Rifle Volunteers.
