YACHT RACES IN WELLINGTON.
There was a good nor'-west wind on Saturday for the yacht races in Wellington, and two of the finishes were fnirly close. Mr. J. B. Speed, Secretary of the Port Nicholson Yacht Club, was starter, timekeeper, and judge, and the handicaps were declared by Mr. F. L. Biss. The Waitangi (Messrs. Georgeson, Jamieson, and Kirker) had a sail-over, as the Maritana (Messrs. G. Mcc and Co.) did not put in an appearance. The cup given by tho ex-Commodore (Mr. E. W. Mills) has been won outright by the Waitangi. A capital start was effected in the second of the three races for second-clas§ yachts. The starters were — Atalanta (scratch), Rona (4min), Mapu (6min), Mahina (Bmin), Mawhiti (lOmin), Kotiri (12min), Siren, Waiwetu, and Jennie Reid (20min). The Rona, splendidly handled by Mr. R. T. Turnbull, finished first, a minute ahead of Atalanta, but on time allowance the Kotiri was awarded first place, Rona second, and Mapu third. The final heat of the race is to be sailed next Saturday. The decisive heat of the Third-class Race resulted in the Ripple (scratch) beating the May (lOmin) by Bmin, and her owner and captain (Mr. Willason) will therefore take the solid silver cup presented by Mr. James Dealey.
