« [press association.] Christchuech, 27th January. Mary M'Keguey, who was discharged yesterday after serving a term of three months for vagrancy, was to-day sentenced to another three months on a charge of drunkenness and riotous behaviour. She has practically been only a week out of gaol in the past year. Alfred Ford and Robert John Beveridge were to-day committed for trial on a charge of breaking aud entering a dwelling at Addington and stealing a ring valued at £10 10s aud other articles. George Hulme, charged with receiving the ring knowing it to have been atoleu, was also committed for trial. Auckland, 27th January. A detective to-night arrested Frederick Lester, charged with conspiring with a man named J. G. Murphy to cheat and defraud Frederick James Eraser between 13th and 19th September, 1898, at Sydney, of divers large sums of money, amounting to £450, by means of the confidence trick. The accused, it is stated, came from the South, having visited Dunedin and Christchurch, and had just come down from Rotorua. Dunedin, 27th January. At a meeting of the local booksellers, the full strength of the trade being represented, it was decided to take concerted action with a view to preventing the introduction of publications whose advertisements contravene the Offensive Publications Act. A deputation was . appointed to wait on the Postal authorities with a view to securing their co-operation in preventing the distribution of objectionable matter through the medium of the Post Office.
