THE TOWN HALL SCHEME.
According to notice, Councillor J. P. Luke brought forward his motion with reference to a Town Hall at the City Council meeting last night, as follows: — "That, with the view of erecting a Town Hall and Municipal offices on the sites at present occupied by Messrs. Gilmer, Hall, Boss, and Smith Bros., at the Market Hall Reserve, negotiations be opened with the abovenamed to ascertain on what terms they will surrender their respective leases. He urged its favourable consideration for reasons which have already been made public. Councillor Anderson seconded the motion in order to gain information. Councillors Lingard and M'Gill considered the idea too expensive. The Mayor said the rental value of the site capitalised was about £16,000, leaving out the value of the license and other considerations. Councillors Deviue, Barber, and Smith thought the proposal useless, as it would certainly cost more than the Council could afford to buy out the tenants, and Councillor Willeston expressed his conviction that what they would have to pay for the goodwill would put them up one of the finest Town Halls in the Southern Hemisphere. The motion was lost on the voices.
