THE COLONY'S CROPS.

THE OFFICIAL RETURNS. A return published in this week's Gazette sets out the corn crops sown or intended to be sown in the colony this season. From this the following facts are extracted regarding the different crops : — Wheat — Total area for threshing, 395,536 acres, increase over last season 79,735 acres ; for chaff, 1211 acres, decrease 18,504; for stock, 109 acres, decrease 11,335 ; quantity of grain now on hand, 1,590,461 bushels, increase 440,800 bushels. Oats— For threshing, 413,963 acres, increase 59,144 acres; for chaff, 204,310 acres, increase 4618 acres ; for stock, 9916 acres, decrease 13,823 acres ; grain now on hand, 1,110,659 bus Eels, decrease 295,937 bushels. Barley-»-For threshing, 46,298 acres, increase 16,378 acres ; for stock, 1877 acres,, deci'ease 2067 acres ; grain on hand, 112,252 bushels, increase 20,530 bushels. Rye — For threshing, 2989 acres, increase 1074 acres ; for stock, 982 acres, d"crease 1465 acres ; grain on hand, 6153 busheli, increase 3801 bushels.

Maize — For threshing, 18,554 acres, increase 3717 acres ; for stock, 1482 acres, increase, 7 acres ; grain on hand, 89,559 bushels, decrease 89,381 bushels. The average doAvn in peas, beans, and linseed shows a decrease, Avhile tares and hops increase. The Agricultural Department sets out in an interim report the estimated yield of wheat, oats, and barley for threshing and also the quantity of grain on hand at 15th November, 1898. The figures are as follows :— Wheat, 395,536 acres, estimated yield 27 bushels per acre, total, 10,679,472 bushels ; oats, 413,963 acres, estimated yield, 35 bushels per acre, total 14,488,705 bushels ; barley, 46,298 acres, 28 bushels per acre, total 1,296,344 bushels.
