Nlw Ply-mouth, Tnis Day. Owing to the excellent dredging work in the harbour, the p.s. Rotoiti was able last night to leave tlie breakwater by a straight channel through the sandbank. For years the Union Company's boats have had to use a circuitous channel. Captain Hood, Harbourmaster, hopes in a few days to make a straight channel deep enough for the Takapuna and Rotoiti at all states of the tide. Auckland, This Day. The number of bankruptcies in Auckland In 1898 was 71, against 68 during 1897. Of this 3'ear's petitions 47 were filed in the first six months. All liabilities, except in nine estates, were under £1000, and there was only one over £2000.
