THE GARRISON BAND.
" Spoils to the victors " have been worthily won by the Wellington Garrison Band at Dunedin, the members of which, among other good things, will presently bear hither the Besson Presentation Shield as their own property as first prize winners in the Colonial Band Contest on three successive occasions. This is a most worthy achievement, most •worthily and hardly won, as all who are familiar with the energy and enthusiasm of Bandmaster Herd ana his musical comrades will know full well. The victory will also be peculiarly gratifying to those — particularly the organisers of the well-remembered fair in the Skating Rink — who laboured so assiduously and gave so liberally towards the fund that enabled the Band to acquire the magnificent set of " Boosey " instruments that have been turned to such good account, and have no doubt largely contributed to the success we chronicle today. We hope that Mr. Herd and his victorious Band will receive the welcome they deserve upon their return, and that the public will not forget that commendation is the more acceptable when it has been hardly earned.
