Recently a disturbance occurred in Johannesburg opposite the residence of Mr. Edgar, a British subject, during which the police entered Mr. Edgar's house, and shot him dead. At the trial of the shooter the- charge of murder was reduced to one of culpable' homicide. Mr. Conyiigham" Greene, the British Agent, has, however, demanded that the charge of murder shall again be substituted. Several meetings of British residents have been held in connection with the matter, and resolutions ' passed in favour of petitioning the Queen to secure justice. The petitioners complain of the intolerable oppression to which Britishers are subjected. They are not permitted to carry firearms, while the Transvaal Government is arming the residents of other nationalities gratis. 26th December. A party of 5000 Britishers marched to the Vice-Consul's house here and presented him with a petition to the Queen setting forth their grievances. The police did not interfere with the demonstration, though they were strongly reinforced from Pretoria. Pretoria, 26th December. The field - cornet whose arrests of British coloured subjects have been the cause of annoyance has been suspended from duty. While the military commandants were discussing the advisableness of resuming military operations against the rebel chief Mpefu, one of them, Major Eramus, declared that the Transvaal artillery compared favourably with that of any of the European Powers. . . London 25th December; The' Right- Hon. -J* Chamberlain, Secretary Vf State- for the Colonies, in reply to a correspondent, said, tnat .he is thoroughly protecting British interests in the Transvaal as well as everywhere else.
