A high north wind raised clouds of dust in town, but did not affect the sheltered course at Caulfield. With Bobadil withdrawn from the Eclipse Stakes backers rushed The Chief, long prices being offered against the others. Until towards the finish the favourite never flattered his supporters. But for being blocked between the two New. South Wales representatives Wait-a-Bit would undoubtedly have won, albeit Cocos proved himself a thoroughly game colt. HAWKES BAY SPRING MEETING. Napier, 12th October. At the second day's racing of the Hawkes Bay Jockey Club the racing was excellent, nearly every finish being lought out ou the post. The concluding results were :—: — Second Handicap Hurdle Race, about one mile and a-half. — Mr. W. Rathbone's b g Sylvauus, by The Dauphin— lnisthona, lOst 121b (Parker), 1 ; Blackberry, lOst 61b ; Flying Shot, 9st, 8. Also started — Rangipunehu, Golden Plover, and Te Ngaehe. Te Ngaehe bolted at the first hurdle when leading. Rangipunehu crashed into ifc, throwing Sweeney and breaking his collarbone. A splendid race ensued up the straight, Sylvanus winning by half a length. Time, 2min 64 3-ssec. Dividend, £4 Bs. Welter Handicap, one mile. — Mr. W. Rathbone's blk h Stockville, 6yrs, by Stockdale — Dowager, 9st 61b (Hercock), 1 ; Waterstone, 9st 2lb, 2 ; Alionora, Bst 81b, 3. Also started — Blarney, Daphne, Fearnought, and Niobe.
