RAILWAY RETURNS.
The return of railway receipts and expenditure for the four weeks ending 20th August shows the former to have been £92,840 J4s and the latter £73,253 14s lid. In the corresponding period of the previous year the figures were £87,538 2s 5d and £64,960 3s 7d respectively. Of the revenue, the North Island lines contributed £32,921 13a 7d, as against £31,324 18s 7d, and the South Island lines £59,919 Os sd, against £56,213 3s lOd. The North Island lines absorbed £29,121 14s lOd, as against £24,552 15s 2d, and the South Island lines £44,132 Os Id, as against £40,407 8s 6d. The proportion of expenses to revenue on the several lines, calculated on an annual average, for the respective periods of 189897, was as follows : — North Island — Kawakawa, 152-94, 180 # 80; Whangarei, 61-46, 101-68; Kaihu, 48*34, 38-81; Auckland, . 72-16, 70-69 ; Wellington-Napier-New Plymouth, 74-90, 78-15. South Island — Hurunui-Bluff, 6456. GO'73; GreymouthBrunner, 6854, 5752 ; Greymouth-Hoki-tika, 68-43, 5718 ; Westport, 37 p O6, 4065; Nelson, ISQ-SO^QrsgjPicton, 113-50, 10976 • grand total, 6773, 65*48. The receipts on the Wellington-Napier-New Plymouth Bection amounted to £21,297 4s 7d, against £19,889 12s lid in the corresponding period last year, the number of passengers carried being 74,392, as against 69,962.
