The Empress Eugenie's Views on War.
The following interesting: statement, made by the Empress Eugenic in Parif, was published simultaneouHly in the Morning Post and the New York Journal :—' l take a sorrowful interest in all wars, for war has been to me my most cruel foe. It robbed me of my Empire, of my son, and, I may also say, of my husband. The SpanishAmerican "war is cruelly interesting to mo, for Spain is the land of my birth, and the United States was visited by my husband, tho Emperor, where he received many courtesies. I would stop this war if I could, for doubtless the problem can be solved without further bloodshed on the part of two great peoples who ought to be friendly. I know little of the political exigencies which brought about this war, for ray life is in the past. But all humanity is one. It is the privilege and the duty of woman to discourage needless suffering. My people are a brave race. They would now display their bravery in declaring for peace, as they have shown it thus far in prosecuting the war. The women of Spain encourage the men to deeds of valour. The nation's reputation for bravery ia interwoven with the history of more than a thousand years. If now peace were proposed it would be an act of moral courage, and no one would dare accuse Spain of cowardice. I know nothing of present politics. My opinion can be of no interest to any living person. But I hate the horrore of war, and I abhor its awful memories.'
