CITY COUNCIL.
Last night's meeting of the City Council was atteuded by the Mayor (Mr. Blair), and Councillors Smith, Anderson, Devine, Higginbottom, M'Gill, Fraser, Barber, Lingard, Myer.'i, and Harcourt. A plumber's provisional license was granted to Mr. W. J. Hoverd. The Public Works Department offered to pay for the cost of laying down the footpath in front of the Government Printing Office on certain conditions. The matter was left in the City Surveyor's hands. The committee set up to deal with the question of improving Mount-street recommended that the City Surveyor should make an estimate of the cost of purchasing some of Mrs. Beth tine's land, and also of carrying out the proposed work. The report was adopted. The following recommendations of the City Reserves Committee were adopted : — 1. That the leave given to Mr. H. D. Crawford in 1893 to form a road through the north-eastern corner of section 9, Town Belt, be now confirmed, subject to the conditions then imposed, and further that the roadway be made to the satisfaction of the City Surveyor ; that it be securely fenced by Mr. Crawford ; that the existing fences on that portion of the section be maintained by Mr. Crawford. 2. That the Council object to the flight of steps which has been erected at the northern end of the road leading to the Convalescent Home to give access to tbe back portion of the town acres on the southern side of the east end of Hay-street. 3. That the constable residing at the cottage in the Botanic Gardens be served with one mouth's notice to vacate same, it being required iv order that arrangements may be made for the custodian's assistant to reside ab the Gardens. 4. That arrangements be made for the employment of a man at the north end of the city and another at the south end, especially to look after the various oi by reserves, and to do such other work iv the way of keeping channels and culverts clear, &c, as may be found practicable. 5. That consent be given to the assignment of the lease of a section of Town Belt at the end of Aro-street from William Adams to Timothy Hayes for the remainder of the term, 2£ years. The recommendations of the Public Works Committee were adopted, with the exception that the One as to laying water on to certain houses in Epuni-street (represeuted by Mr. E. H. Beere) was referred back. The Sand and Gravel Committee reported that it did not consider that anything should be done in reference to leasing Mr. H. D. Crawford's gravel pit. The report was adopted, aud it was decided that the Committee should make further enquiries as to the supply of sand and gravel. Councillor Harcourt made a verbal report as to the work of the recent Municipal Conference, aud expressed the opinion that good results would follow. A vote of thanks was passed to the Couueil's delegates at the Conference (Councillors Harcourt and Myers). Councillor Myers moved thai, his name should be taken off the Boundaries Committee, aud that of Councillor Lingard be substituted. Several Councillors objected, and the motion was withdrawn.
