When the two men Conrad Basan and David Courtney were before the Court yesterday, charged with being " a rogue and a vagabond " and "an idle and disorderly person " respectively, they were remanded, on Mr. Wilford's application, till 9.30 o'clock this morning. At 9 50, when Mr. Kenny, S.M., was hearing auother case, Mr. Wilford asked that the two cases he was interested in should be again adjourned, as he was engaged in the Supreme Court at 10.30, and it was only fair that the men should be given every opportunity of defending themselves. It was tlren announced that two Justices were in attendance waiting to hear the two cases, and Mr. Kenny intimated that, under the circumstances, the application had better be made before them. His Worship had no doubt they would grant the request of counsel, and requested the Clerk of the Court to explain the position to the Justices, who were sitting in the Clerk's offiqe. Accordingly the application was repeated before Messrs. Bannister and Arnold, who, however, could see no reason for adjourning the cases, as they had been specially adjourned till this morning to suit Mr. Wilford's convenience. Counsel replied that he was ready to proceed with the case at 9.30, but no Justices came till 20 minutes later. However, the matter ended at that stage by the Bench ordering the cases to be called, and Mr. Wilford left the roorti, after advising his clients to proffer no defence and make no statement. They followed his advice when the cases came on. Detective Broberg gave evidence as to the character of Basan, saying he was a notorious member of the criminal class, lived in the company of thieres and loafers and on a woman's prostitution. As Detective Nixon was about to be sworn, Mr. Wilford returned, in bis Supreme Court robes, and, addressing the Bench, complained that a gross injustice was being done, and continuing hotl}', designated the conduct of the Justices as " absolutely scandalous." They were denying the two men a fair trial, and it was nothing short of a scandal and a crying shame that two men in a British colony should be denied justice. The Bench expressed regret that Mr. Wilford should have so addressed the Court, and suggested an adjournment for a quarter of an hour to enable another solicitor to be instructed. Mr. Wilford characterised such a short adjournment as absurd, and then again asked if the two men were to be given a fair and just trial or not. A discussion followed, in which the Bench, counsel, and Inspector Pender participated, and eventually the cases were allowed to stand over till S}.ls this afternoon.
