"AND FOOLS STEP IN WHERE ANGELS FEAR TO TREAD." TO THE EDITOR.
Sie — In your issue of last night there appears a letter uuder tho norn de plume " Citizen," commenting rather severely on the fact of the Archbishop and Eishop of Wellington having been invited by His Excellency the Governor to the State dinner on the 24th instant. It is a great pity these scribblers are not wise enough to ask their friends for information before they rush into print, and so prevent them from displaying their ignorance. In the Colonial Office regulations published by authority of the English Government, Governors of colonies have rules and regulations laid down for their guidance, and 1 among these is n table of precedency. By this the order is as follows : — The Governor, the senior military and naval officers (if a General or Admiral), the Bishop, the Chief Justice, the senior military or naval officer on the station, the members of the Executive, the Puisne Judges, &o. It would therefore appear that a Bishop does hold an official position, notwithstanding "Citizen's" opinion to the contrary. Who tho other Bishops are that " Citizen " says reside in Wellington is a mystery. I may also inform him that he is quite wrong in stating that other Governors did not invite Bishops to official dinners. As regards the P.S., the extract from the table of precedency answers his sneer. I am, Ac, EVANOHLIST.
