There were only three criminal cases. The Grand Juiy threw out the bill against George Quiu, of Westport, charged with breaking and entering. James Brown, for attempted suicide, was bound in his own recognisance to come up for sentence when called upon. The case against Mr.". Margaret Carson, charged with child murder, occupied the rest of the day. After two hours' retirement the jury intimated that there w:is no prospect of agreement. The Judge said he would give them auother hour, and if there was no prospect of an agreement then they would be locked up till morning. At the expiration of the tour the jury brought in a verdict of Not Guilty. Auckland, 14th March. At "the Criminal Sessions Mrs. Mary Hall pleaded Guilty to a charge of the theft of £lt)O worth of jewellery, and on the charge o>f forgery, in conjunction with a lad jiauied W. J. M'Donald, she also pleaded Guilty, but the male prisoner pleaded Not Guilty. No evidence was offered against M'Donald, and he was discharged. It appeared from the evidence given that Mrs. Hall had drawn her husband's money out o£ the bank to the extent of £300, and the consisted of making faly.e entries in the bank-book to make it appear that the money was still in the bank. The prisoner said that her husband, who "was away from home at times, had given her a general order to draw money out of the bank. She drew the lot, and as he was a passionate man she did not like to tell him, and got the boy to alter the figures. His Honour treated the two offences as though they were one, and admitted the prisoner to probation for 12 months*
