At the close of last night's nieetiug of the Petone Council Councillor Findlay tendered his resignation, as he intends to leave for England by Saturday's steamer. Of late there has been a marked difference of opinion between Councillor Findlay aud a section of the Council, and in order to test the feeling of ratepayers on the matter Councillor Findlay will, so he informs our Petono correspondent, contest the first vacancy in the Council after his return, in about six months' time. Court Sir George Bowen, A.0.F., met last evening, and initiated four candidates. A letter of condoleuce was ordered to be sent to the family of the late Bro. Campbell, who was one of the founders of the court. It was also decided to resume the monthly " socials " which ware carried on so successfully last winter, and a committee was appointed to arrange. The Wellington Festival Choral Society announces elsewhere that owing to Thursday being a public holiday the usual weekly practice will not be held. The Port Nicholson Yacht Club intends to hold an "at home" in the pavilion at Day's Bay on Tuesday evening, sth prox. The Duchess will take across the members and their friends, returning to town before midnight. A committee of ladies has been formed to act as chaperons. Onslow Borough ratepayers are asked to meet at the Wadestown Schoolroom to-mor-row evening to reconsider the £5000 loan proposal. The Loyal Wellington Juvenile Lodge, 1.0.0. F., M.U., has set up a committee to arrange amusements for the winter evenings. An effort is to be made to form a minstrel troupe. The annual meeting of the Metropolitan Building and Investment Society is to be held this evening. A lecture on " Modern Spiritualism " will be delivered at the rooms of the Psychological Society, Ghuznee-street, to-morrow night. Mr. A. Lindsay's boot shops close on Thursday afternoon instead of Wednesday. The Salvation Army's harvest thanksgiving services will begin on Sunday next, and will be led by Major Harris. The arrangements are notified elsewhere. Messrs. Eildes, Mitchell and Co., produce merchants, are now established in the premises 1n Victoria-street formerly occupied by Messrs. Finn, Chishohn and Co., to whose customers in the grain trade, as well as their own, they publish an address in our advertising columns. Messrs. Macdonald, Wilson & Co. will sell at 204, Upper Wallis-street, to-morrow, the whole of the valuable household furniture and effects as contained in the tbirteenroomed residence. Suffice it to &ay that for originality, beauty, and variety the display of new capes, jackets, and mantles is unapproachable.
