* PRANCE lIAS HER EYE ON A CHINESE POUT. A PRESS INDEX TO RUSSIAN PEELING. [press association.] London, 14th March. Reports from Pekin state that Frauce intends to occupy Lerhan, a town on the east coast of the Kwangtung Peninsula. St. Petersburg, 14th March. The Novosti advocates the adoption by the Government of a moderate policy, urging that a colossal extension of her possessions will compromise Russia's own interests. The Russian naval expenditure is to be spread over a period of seven years. " Lerhan," which is given as the name of the place the Prench are coveting, is practi, cally an impossible verbal form in Chineseand, so far as we can gather, there is no town of the name in the Empire. The word has probably been corrupted in transmission. The place referred to is apparently a port on the peninsula iv Southern Kwangtung, over against the Island of Hainan.
