[press association.] New Plymouth, This Day. The Bell Dairy Factory, Henwood-road, owned by Mr. ,1. Crockett, was destroyed by fire at half-past 1 o'clock on Sunday morning. The insurances were — Building, £200 ; plant, £400 in the Norwich Uniou. The loss is estimated at 50 per cent. more. It is supposed that the cause was a spark from the boiler fire. Napier, This Day. Mr. Chamberlain, Collector of Customs, opened an enquiry to - day touching the death of Captain Anderson as the result of an accident at Cuttle Cove during the Waikare's trip to the Sounds. The officers of the ship, Captain Straug, and Mr. Cook (superintending engineer) were examined. The evidence went to show that the accident was entirely due to the breaking of a defective link in the hydraulic gear, which caused the crane to drop and swing inboard, sweeping the decks. This fault was due to the bad quality of the iron used iv the construction of the particular link, and it could not have been detected. It was also shown that the ship proceeded on her voyage at the request of Captain Anderson and the injured passengers, and with the concurrence of the two doctors on board. The brakes of the engines attached to the sheep train would not work, and she ran past the station, and the Wellington train then came in.
