OUR DEFENCES.
IMPORTANT STEPS DECIDED UPON The Government has had under cansideration for some time various recommendations made by the Commandant of the Forces for the improvement of our defence system, and has decided to adopt some of them. Amongst other things it is intended to establish a field battery of six guns, and it has been suggested that its head-quarters should be Wellington. The guns will probably be 15-pounders, and each is to be of the most approved pattern. Attached to each will be an ammunition waggon. The Government has also decided to increase the strength of the Volunteer Force, and in various ways make it more effective than at present. <*
