Of 486 tons southern prodtice by the Herald yesterday, 124 tons had to be lauded at this port. A new wheel for the barque Rangitikei has been manufactured by Messrs Waddell, M'Leod, and Weir to replace the one broken while the barque ■was being tbwed into the stream last week. Very bad weather was experienced by the Omapere on her trip down the coast. The heavy south-east gale and high seas running prevented working at any of the bays, At Gisborne the passengers wore landed safely, but the lighter was unable to lie alongside the steamer to receive and discharge cargo, and Captain Adams was compelled to leave without performing this work. The vessel's progress was considerably impeded by a. high easterly swell between Napier and Castlepoint. She bad on board 539 bales wool for the Freights Reduction Committee. Nearly 27 hours was taken by the Mahinapua to steam the distance between New Plymouth and "Wellington, for which the south-east gale was responsible. The dairy, produce brought by the steamer for transhipment to the Aotea consisted of 6270 boxes butter. The Lonuon correspondent of the Auckland Herald writes that the re-built and re-engined Aorangi has been a great disappointment to her | purchasers, the guaranteed speed nob having been realised. The London directors of the New Zealand Shipping Co are therefore sending out an engineer to ascertain from what cause the shortcoming in speed has arisen. It is thought possible that as the engines are in some respects novel they may not have been worked to full advantage. One of the Aornngi'rf sister ships, the ss Euapebu, j is at present laid up in the Tyne, there being m reality little work for that class of steamer. The passenger traffic to New ZeiUund is just now, and has been for some time, deplorably slack. I leain at Cook's office that there are very few enquiries for passages to New Zealand, and both the New Zealand Shipping and Shaw, Savill and Albion Companies feel this state of affairs somewhat severely. To-day the steamer Manaroa was laid up for alterations, &c. It is expected the work will be completed by the end of the week. The Union Co has chartered the barque Handa Isle to load ab Newcastle in a fortnight for Wellington. Mr Signal, engineer of the Queen of the South, is about to visit England, his intention being to caleh the Alameda, sailing from Auckland ou Sat ui day. Mr Signal's musion is in connection with the purchase or building of a steamer to ran in the East Coast andJUy ttelton trade, The vesael
