WELLINGTO N TECHNICAL SCHOOL.
. 9 The Director of the Wellington Technical School (Mr. A. D. Riley), in his report on the annual examinations in connection with the institution, states that the total number of papers worked were 1144— namely, 362 primary scholarships, 538 second grade, 244 third grade. Primary scholarship papers. — The competition for the 50 drawing scholarships offered annually by the Board still continues very keen, the number competing this year being 181. There were 30 competitors for the 12 second year scholarships. As these scholarships are only available to those holdiug a first year the selection is based upon the candidates past year's work as well as upon the passes obtained in the second-grade drawing examination. Eight of the candidates were awarded second-grade passes in model and five in freehand drawing. The following is the general summary of the result.— Second-grade art — The most important feature of this section is an increase of 256 papers upon last year's number, and the much better results obtained in geometrical, perspective, and memory blackboard drawing. Third-grade art and technology — A marked improvement is manifest in the work of the first year's course subjects, particularly in painting in water-colour from the cast. The numbers in the second year's course are considerably less, owing to there being no scholarship* open for competition this year.
