» [BY TELEGBAPH— PHESS ASSOCIATION.] Auckland, 9th December". In the "makutu" case, the accused, Ngapaki, now charged with having drowned another Maori woman, has been remanded until Saturday. She has an infant only three or four weeks old. She is a young woman under 20 , years of age. She lias intelligent features, though they are somewhat marred now by her trouble, which she evidently feels keenly. It is rumoured that the local (Waitotoku) Native Committee had the whole circumstances under consideration for some days before reporting the matter to the police, and the result of their deliberations was to the effect that deceased had practised witchcraft upon the accused, which was supposed to exonerate her from any responsibility for her acts towards the deceased. An uncle of Ngapaki is also reported to have been under her evil influence.
