TO-DAY'S PARLIAMENT.
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL. THE ELECTION OP SPEAKER. On the Council roll being called over three members were found to be- absent — the Hons. C. C. Bowen (who had leave of absence from the Governor), Sir George Whitmore, and S. E. Shrimski. The last, the Minister explained, was ' prevented by his religious duties (to-day being a Jewish fast) from attending till 6 p.m. He therefore asked that the election of the Speaker should be deferred till 7.30, but a motion to that effect wa? lost on the voices. Mr. Shrimski and Sir' George "Whitinore were formally excused from attendance. At 2.50 p.m. the galleries were cleared (including the Press and the Hansard Gallery), and the Council proceeded to the election of Speaker. The present Speaker, the Hon. H. J. Millar, is expected to be re-elected.
