A despatch received by His Excellency the Governor from the Secretary of State in reference to the address sent for presentation to Her Majesty the Queen from the Wellington Political Society will be read at the society's $ext monthly meeting. In the defended case of Commercial Agency v. I. Whale, a claim of £6 19s 5d for goods, supplied, rent, damage, and work done, Mr. Young appeared for thft plaintiffs and Mr. Skerrett for the defendant. A counter-claim for £2 10s 4d, value of goods retained, was put in by the defendant. Judgment was given for theplaintifffor£3l6s2d; butasthe defendant had paid £3 15s 6d into Court, this left a balance of 8d in favour of the plaintiff a? the result of the litigation. Each side was ordered to pay its own costs. In the defended case of J. A. Hall v. W. Morris, a claim of £1 12s, judgment was given for the defendant, with 9s costs. j The Garison Ball will take place at the Drillshed this evening. It will be noticed that a brake service from Petone to Wellington has been arranged for. Mr. T. Foley has been re-elected Chairman of No. * Co-operative Building Society. Mr. Munro is to be the direotors' auditor. A concert and dance will be held in the Ngahauranga Hall to-morrow evening in aid of the piano fund, a brake running out from the city. "Scenes and Impressions of America" is the title of a lecture to be delivered by Dr. Wolfenden, of Chicago, in the Primitive Methodist Church, Newtown, to-morrow evening. The lecture has been very highly spoken of in other parts of the colony where it has been delivered. Our readers are informed by circular that the Sydney Cash Drapery Coy. 13 opening a shop on Lambton-quay, where drapery in all its branches will be sold at Sydney cash prices. This branch, we are told, is one of the many lately started in several towns in New Zealand, and is an offshoot from the largest and admittedly cheapest shop in Sydney — the home of big concerns and cheap prices. Who has not heard of the fabulous bargains to be obtained in Hordern's Haymarket, Sydney? and visitors to that city have been surprised at their enormous warehouses, where everything is of the best quality at lowest Free Trade prices. We need not enlarge upon the advantage of being able to supply our wants at a very small cost, which the new firm is prepared to do. — Advt. The attention of architects is directed to a notice in our advertising columns inviting competitive designs for a new schoolroom for St. Mark's Parish Church. Messrs. Davis & Clater, shirt manufacturers and direct importers, Lambton-quay and Cuba-street, publish in another column details of the prices of men's evening dress requisites. Tenders are invited by the liquidator of the Lyttelton and Peninsula Steamship Co., Ltd., of Christchurch, for the purchase of the steamer Jane Douglas, 75 tons, now trading between Lytteltoa and Banks Peninsula. Messrs. Finn, Chisholm & Co. draw attention in our advertising columns to a concession they are making to all purchasers of Wolff bicycles during the next two weeks. The " White Flyer " is not, aB might be supposed, a carrier pigeon, but the name of a new cyoling shoe advertised by Potter & Son. The firm has also an advertisement on the first page, adressed to ladies, in reference to the ''Zephyr" shoe. Tile hearths and register grates are the subject of an advertisement by Messrs. Wilkins & Field, the well-known Mannersstreet ironmongers, in another column. The Sydney Cash Drapery Company notifies the opening of a branch of its business ou Lambton-quay, and advertises its goods at Sydney prices. The company has opened branches in several of the North Island towns, and promises a full price-list later on as soon as the balance of the stock comes to hand. To-morrow, at 2.30 p.m., Messrs. Harcourt & Co. will sell by auction a number of valuable level building sites, of which some have frontage to Tasman-street, while others front a newly-constructed 40ft road named Ran-furly-terrace. The new terrace has been well formed and drains have been laid down, so that there is nothing to hinder immediate building operations, and the convenient position of the block, close to tho tram line and the Basin Reserve, and only 20 minutes' walk from the General Post Office, ensures that ere long this land also will be covered by dwellinghouses. The auctioneers call special attention to the easy terms offered to purchasers. The attention of the trade is directed to an unreserved sale of walnut chairs, to be held by Messrs. George Thomas & Co., for the benefit of whom it may concern, to-morrow, at 2.30 o'clock, at their rooms, Custom-house-quay. The goods were landed slightly damaged, ex Maria, from Now York. Messrs. Baker Bros, will offer for auction at their rooms to morrow several valuable city properties. To-morrow , at their new rooms, Mannersstreet/Messrs. F. Sidey & Co. hold a eale of furniture and effects. Messrs. George Thomas & Co. will sell by auction to-morrow cases of Canadian walnut chairs. Messrs. Harcourt & Co. advertise the summarised details of the household furniture and effects to be sold at tbe residence of Mr. J. H. H. Jack, Woolcombe-street (next Mr. J. Duthie's), on Wednesday next at 11 a.m. The sale will be absolutely without reserve, and special attention is directed to tho solid mahogany furnituro, the new and best quality Brussels carpets, upright 'grand piano, &o. A oebat number of people are now alive to the f aot that white or fancy China mattings make a most economical floor covering, and are both durable and pleasant under the feet. To cope with the ever-increasing demand, we have just opened 46 bales, and it is our mention to place them on the market at very low rates during the Great Winter Sale at Te Aro Houbo. Another lot of some magnitude that we are adding to this great sale is a lot of 200 honeycomb quilts, in three sizes, which we purpose selling at fully 30 per cent, under usual prices. Great attention will be devoted to cash orders from the country for any article quoted in our advertisement from the Great Winter Sale at Te Aro House.— Advt.
