« A FORCE SURPRISED BY TUAREG ARABS, [PBESS ASSOCIATION.] (Received August 19, 10 a.m.) Paeis, 18th August. A disaster has been sustained by the French troops in Nigritia. A body of Tuareg Arabs, of the tribe which holds the country to the south of Timbuctoo and east of the Niger, surprised a detachment of French troops at Dire, on the Niger, scattering them and killing their commanding officer.
