THE ANTI-BETTIN G CRUSADE THE FIRST PROSECUTION IN NEW ZEALAND. [BY TELEGRAPH— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Auckland, 20th July.

Richard May was charged at. the Magistrate's Court to-day with having on sth June unlawfully used the Ellerslie Racecourse lor the purpose of betting with persons upon horse races. The information was kid under the Gamiug and Lotteries Act, 1881. Mr. J. A. Tole appeared for the prosecution, aud Mr. Cotter lor the defendant. Mr. Cotter said this was, he thought, the first prosecution of its kind in New Zealand against persons for betting. It was following a number of prosecutions which took place in Australia. There was also a decision at Home that betting on racecourses was legal. In view of this information, he suggested that the present case might be allowed to stand over until particulars ot the Appeal Court case arrived from Home. His Worship believed it was the first case in New Zealand. Mr. Tole— l think Auckland is the only place where this cash betting on racecourses is carried on to auy extent. His Worship granted an adjournment till 24th August, pending fuller information with regard lo the Appeal Court case.
