Sir John Forrest, Premier -of Westralia, addressing a large meeting of tho Westralia Mining Exchange, said he expected the value of the gold export of Westralia in 1897 to be considerably over two millions sterling. By 1599 the colony ought to be the greatest gold-producer in Australasia. Personally, he would be very glad if his colony would assist in the matter of national defence, hut he asked the Brit^h people to remember that if Australia did not contributes yet, it was building up another Britain for all their countrymen. He intended to do everything to assist capitalists in any reasonable request.
